Does text length affect AI detection?

Yes, substantially. These tools work from statistical patterns across a document, so short passages give them very little to work with — Turnitin requires a minimum of 300 words of prose before it will produce an AI writing report at all.

A detector is estimating a distribution. With 2,000 words it has thousands of observations; with 80 words it has almost none, and an unusual paragraph that would be unremarkable in a long document dominates the estimate.

That is why vendors impose minimums rather than returning a low-confidence number. Turnitin's published file requirements set a floor of 300 words of prose, and other tools state their own. A tool that happily scores a single sentence is not being more capable, it is declining to tell you the result is meaningless.

Length also interacts with how a score is reported. A percentage over a short document moves in large jumps — one flagged sentence in a five-sentence paragraph is 20% — which makes small documents look dramatic without anything dramatic having happened.

The practical consequence is that an excerpt scored in isolation is weak evidence, and an excerpt scored in isolation and then quoted as a percentage for the whole assignment is worse than weak.

When this answer changes

Sentence-level reporting changes the picture, because the tool is making many small judgements rather than one overall estimate. Individually those are less reliable than the document score, not more.
