The most generous free AI detectors right now are Scribbr (unlimited scans at 1,200 words each), QuillBot (1,200 words per scan, six scans a day), and Copyleaks (a single scan up to 25,000 characters without an account). None of them is reliably "the most accurate," because no free detector publishes enough methodology to prove that — so this ranking runs on what you can verify: limits, transparency, and features.
One disclosure before anything else. We build an AI detector and a humanizer ourselves, and our own free detector appears in this list. We haven't put it first, and our editorial policy explains the rules we wrote for ourselves before reviewing anyone — including the rule that we don't publish accuracy percentages, ours or anyone's, without published methodology behind them. Judge accordingly.
Why this ranking ignores accuracy claims
Every tool below claims somewhere between "high accuracy" and 99.98%. Those numbers cannot all describe the same reality, and most of them come with conditions the marketing page shrinks to a footnote. Copyleaks says 99% "backed by independent third-party studies." Grammarly says it "ranks #1 on RAID's independent benchmark." QuillBot claims a "99% detection rate, according to independent evaluations from RAID" — the same benchmark Grammarly cites for its own first-place claim. At least one of those framings is doing heavy lifting.
We haven't run our own controlled test yet (when we do, the methodology and raw results will be published — see the hands-on section below), so we won't pretend to know which claim survives contact with real text. What we can verify by opening each product and reading each pricing page: how many words you get, how often, whether you need an account, what the readout shows, and how honestly the vendor talks about its own limits. That last one matters more than people think. A detector that admits where it fails is more useful than one that claims it doesn't. The free-limit table
This is the part most "best free AI detector" posts get wrong or leave vague, so here it is with the numbers we pulled from each vendor's live site in August 2026. Word estimates from character limits assume roughly six characters per English word.

Two caveats on the table. Vendors change these numbers without announcements — GPTZero's free monthly cap is widely reported as 10,000 words but its own pricing page doesn't state it plainly, which is why it carries a verify flag. And "unlimited" always means unlimited scans, not unlimited insight: Scribbr's free tool, by its own admission, runs a weaker model than its paid one. More on that below, because Scribbr saying so out loud is exactly why it ranks where it does.
The rankings
1. QuillBot — the best all-round free detector
QuillBot's free AI detector gives you 1,200 words per scan and six scans per day, no account required. That's up to 7,200 words of daily checking — enough for a student to check a thesis chapter in pieces or a freelancer to screen a day's drafts — and the limits are stated right on the tool instead of buried in a plans page.
The readout is the other reason it's first. You get a 0–100% score, sentence-level highlights showing which passages drove the score, and one free "rewrite card" explaining what the detector reacted to. It supports 20+ languages by its own claim and tells you plainly that results improve past 80 words, which is an honest admission that short text is where all detectors guess. The accuracy claim — 99% per RAID, the academic adversarial benchmark published at ACL in 2024 — is at least anchored to a named, public, independent benchmark rather than an internal study. That's the right kind of claim to make, even though RAID results depend heavily on which slice of the benchmark you quote — and the paper's own conclusion is that tools advertising "99% or more" are "easily fooled by adversarial attacks". Weaknesses: six scans a day is a real ceiling for heavy users, and the deeper explanations sit behind Premium.
2. Scribbr — unlimited scans and the most honest fine print in the industry
Scribbr's free detector allows unlimited checks at up to 1,200 words per submission, no sign-up. For pure volume, nothing else on this list touches it. Paragraph-level feedback sorts text into four buckets — AI-generated, AI-generated and AI-refined, human-written and AI-refined, human-written — which is a more truthful frame than a single percentage, since mixed drafts are what real people actually produce.
But here's the reason Scribbr nearly took first place: its own page admits the free tool runs at "average accuracy" against older models (GPT-2/3/3.5-class), reserves the stronger model for the paid version, and cites research finding the best premium tool managed 84% accuracy and the best free tool 68%. Read that again. A vendor citing a study that caps its own product at 84% is doing something almost nobody in this market does. We'd rather point you at a tool that tells you it will be wrong sometimes than one that claims 99.98% and lets you find out the hard way. The trade: four languages, no per-sentence granularity, and that free-tier model gap is real — it will be weakest on exactly the newest AI text you most want to catch.
3. Copyleaks — 25,000 characters in a single free scan
Copyleaks lets you scan up to 25,000 characters — roughly 4,000 words — in one pass without even logging in, and creating a free account adds monthly credits. If you have one long document and want a second opinion on the whole thing at once instead of feeding it through a 1,200-word slot eight times, this is the tool.
The product is genuinely serious: sentence-level insights, an "AI Logic" feature that attempts to show why text was flagged, 30+ languages, and integrations across Chrome, Google Docs, and every major LMS (Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, D2L and others). This is enterprise software with a free front door.
Why not higher? Transparency. Copyleaks claims 99% accuracy and a 0.03% false positive rate. A 0.03% FP rate means three wrongly flagged documents per ten thousand human ones — an extraordinary claim for a statistical classifier, and independent work on hard cases has recorded rates hundreds of times higher — 61.22% on non-native English essays in Liang et al., and a 16.9% floor for ZeroGPT in RAID's threshold sweep. The claim may hold under the specific test conditions Copyleaks used; the marketing does not lead with those conditions. Generous limits, first-class features, fine print you have to go digging for.
4. GPTZero — the famous one, still worth having
GPTZero is the detector your professor has heard of. Built by Edward Tian and launched in January 2023 while he was a Princeton student, it went viral, raised venture funding, and became the consumer default. The free tier accepts about 10,000 characters per scan (roughly 1,600 words) with no monthly cap plainly stated on the pricing page — that opacity costs it points here.
What you get is polished: color-coded sentence-level highlights, a probability score, and the option to escalate to an "Advanced Scan." GPTZero publishes more granular numbers than most — it claims detecting 95.7% of AI texts while incorrectly flagging 1% of human texts, and 99%+ "when filtering to modern LLMs." Note what that phrasing concedes: the headline number depends on which models you count. Paid plans start at $12.99 a month billed annually (checked 12 August 2026). A good free tool with a limits page that makes you work too hard.
5. HumanFlow — ours, placed where the numbers put it
Our own free detector gives you 10,000 detection words per month, in scans of up to 1,500 words, with a sentence-level readout showing which lines look machine-typical and why. Per scan, that beats QuillBot and Scribbr; per month, 10,000 words is less than Scribbr's unlimited or QuillBot's theoretical 7,200 a day, which is why we're fifth and not first. It requires an account, which some readers will reasonably count against it; per our privacy claims, scanned text isn't stored.
Two things we do differently, stated as facts rather than virtues and you can weigh them yourself. We publish no accuracy percentage for our own detector, because we haven't published a methodology that would make such a number meaningful — when we run the public test described below, the number and the method ship together or not at all. And the companion humanizer doesn't promise to beat any detector, because nobody can honestly promise that. If you want a detector whose vendor tells you exactly how far to trust it, that's the pitch. If you want the biggest free allowance on the market, use Scribbr.
6. ZeroGPT — generous scan box, vague everything else
ZeroGPT accepts 15,000 characters per free scan — around 2,500 words, second only to Copyleaks — with no account, plus sentence highlighting with percentages, batch file upload, PDF reports, and an API. The interface ships in six languages and the vendor says it supports "all languages."
The problem is that almost nothing else is pinned down. The accuracy claim is an unquantified "High Accuracy Model." The free tier's total cap isn't published. Pricing lives behind a page that lists plan categories without numbers. And ZeroGPT has a history of surfacing in false-positive anecdotes — it rated the Declaration of Independence 97.93% AI-generated while passing an AI-rewritten Forster text as human, in the same test (Decrypt / Trust Insights, October 2024). Despite the name, it is unrelated to GPTZero, a confusion the naming does nothing to discourage. Use it as one voice in a panel of scans; don't let it be the deciding vote.
7. Grammarly — the most convenient, the least detector
Grammarly's free AI detector requires no sign-up and lives inside an ecosystem millions already use. Its fine print is genuinely good: the page states outright that "no AI detector is 100% accurate," that detectors "do not track authorship," and that detection "should never be used as a standalone verification method." That's the responsible framing this entire market should copy.
It's last anyway, because as a free detector it gives you the least: though its detector page does state the limit plainly, at 1,200 words per scan, the free readout is a percentage with basic flagging, and the useful parts — exact flagged phrases, detailed analysis — sit in Grammarly Pro. The 99%-accuracy and "#1 on RAID" claims share the same benchmark QuillBot cites for its own 99%, which tells you how much interpretive room these leaderboard claims contain. Fine for a quick gut-check inside a tool you already have open. Not the one to base a decision on.
How to actually use a free detector (whichever you pick)
A single free scan answers a narrower question than most people think they're asking. The score tells you how machine-typical your text looks to one classifier at one threshold — not who wrote it. So:
- Run at least two detectors on anything that matters. Disagreement between tools is normal and is itself information: it means your text sits near the statistical boundary where false positives live.
- Scan at least 300 words at a time. Every serious vendor concedes short text is unreliable; Turnitin won't even score fewer than about 300 words, and QuillBot flags 80 words as its floor for meaningful results.
- Treat 100% human and 100% AI as the only confident outputs. Mid-range scores are the tools saying "I don't know" in percentage form.
- If you're a student self-checking before submission, remember the detector your instructor uses (usually Turnitin) is one none of these free tools can see into — a clean GPTZero scan is not a Turnitin prediction. Our guide to the overall best AI detector by use case covers that gap in detail.
And if a detector flags writing you know is yours, that's a documented failure mode, not proof of anything — non-native English writers, heavy self-editors, and technical writers get flagged at documented, disproportionate rates. What we have not done
We have not run our own hands-on test of any of these detectors. Everything above rests on vendor claims and published research, and that is exactly how you should weight it. We would rather say so than publish a table of numbers we did not measure — and it is why the next section hands you the method instead of asking you to trust ours.

What is the best completely free AI detector? For volume, Scribbr: unlimited scans at 1,200 words each with no account. For the best free readout per scan, QuillBot: sentence-level highlights, six 1,200-word scans daily. For one big document in a single pass, Copyleaks' 25,000-character no-login scan. There is no defensible single "most accurate free detector" — no free tool publishes methodology strong enough to settle that.
Are free AI detectors accurate? They're inconsistent, and inconsistency is the finding. Published research has shown detectors falsely flagging an average of 61.22% of human-written TOEFL essays (Liang et al., Patterns, 2023), while the strongest tools do genuinely well on unedited AI text, GPTZero recording 2.50% false negatives in the DUPE study, and the weakest sit nowhere near that. Scribbr's own cited research puts the best free tool at 68% accuracy. Treat any free scan as one opinion, not a verdict.
Do free AI detectors give the same results as paid ones? Sometimes not even from the same vendor. Scribbr openly states its free detector uses a weaker model than its premium one. Paid tiers typically buy longer scans, batch processing, and deeper explanations; whether they buy meaningfully better classification is rarely demonstrated with published methodology.
Will a free detector tell me what Turnitin will say? No. Turnitin is institution-only, uses its own model and thresholds, won't score under roughly 300 words, and displays 1–19% scores as an asterisk. A clean result on any free tool is not a prediction of your Turnitin score — different classifier, different cutoffs, different training data.
Why do two free detectors disagree about the same text? Each vendor trains its own classifier and — critically — chooses its own threshold for calling text "AI." That threshold is a business decision balancing false positives against false negatives. Text near the boundary flips categories depending on where each vendor drew the line.
Can I trust a detector's 99% accuracy claim? Read the conditions. GPTZero's 99% applies "when filtering to modern LLMs"; Copyleaks' figures come from specific test sets; Grammarly and QuillBot both cite the same RAID benchmark for competing claims. A 99% figure without its test conditions is marketing, not measurement — we've written a whole guide to decoding these claims at the accuracy hub.
Is it safe to paste my essay into a free AI detector? Check each tool's privacy policy before pasting unpublished or sensitive work — policies on storing and reusing submitted text vary widely. Several tools (including ours) state that scanned text isn't stored; others are silent, which you should read as a no.
