ZeroGPT is a free, high-traffic AI detector that checks up to 15,000 characters per scan with no account required. As a rough first look at unedited AI text, it's usable. As evidence, it isn't: in a documented 2024 test it rated the Declaration of Independence 97.93% AI-generated, and it publishes no methodology to explain why.

What ZeroGPT is (and what it isn't)
ZeroGPT, at zerogpt.com, is one of the most-visited AI detection sites on the web. Paste text, click a button, get a percentage on a gauge with the allegedly AI-written sentences highlighted. No signup, no payment, no waiting. That frictionless free scan is the entire growth strategy, and it worked: the site claims "Millions of Users Trust ZeroGPT," and its traffic puts it among the biggest consumer detectors anywhere.
It is not GPTZero. This confusion is constant and worth clearing up in one paragraph. GPTZero was built by Edward Tian, launched in January 2023 while he was a Princeton student, raised venture funding, publishes technical material, and positions itself toward educators. ZeroGPT is a different product from a different — and far more anonymous — operator, with a name close enough to ride the wave. Nobody is named on its site, and it publishes no founding date, which is itself worth noticing in a tool people cite as evidence. If a teacher told you your essay "failed GPTZero," check which tool they actually used. The two produce different scores on the same text, for reasons we cover in how detectors work.
Around the free detector, ZeroGPT has bolted on a full utility belt: an AI humanizer, a plagiarism checker, a paraphraser, a summarizer, a grammar checker, a translator, a word counter, and a chatbot called ZeroCHAT. That sprawl tells you something about the business. This is a volume play — attract enormous search traffic with a free tool, upsell a slice of it to subscriptions, sell API access to the rest. There's nothing wrong with that model. But it's a different animal from a detection company staking its reputation on published research, and the difference shows up exactly where you'd expect: in the evidence.
What ZeroGPT claims — and what it publishes to back it
The claims on the current site are notably vague. ZeroGPT says its detection runs on "DeepAnalyse™ Technology," described as "a pioneering research in the modeling of AI content detection," using a multi-stage methodology to catch text from ChatGPT, GPT-4, GPT-5, Gemini, Grok and other models. Premium users get a "High Accuracy Model" — an "advanced and premium model, trained on all languages and multiple LLM models to provide highly accurate results."
Notice what's missing: a number. It used to be there. When Weichert and Dimobi ran their 2024 study, the site was advertising 98% accuracy — their measurement came back at 78.62%. Today's homepage claims "the highest accuracy rate of detection" across "all the languages" and quantifies neither. There is no whitepaper. No named research team. No published dataset, no confusion matrix, no false-positive rate, no versioned changelog. A trademark symbol on "DeepAnalyse" is not a methodology.
To be fair, vagueness cuts both ways. A vendor that declines to print "99% accurate!" in its hero banner is arguably making a smaller false promise than competitors who print exactly that. And the claim of supporting all languages, while unverifiable, at least matches how people actually use a free web tool — they paste whatever they have. But when a tool's output can end up in an academic misconduct meeting, "trust the gauge" is not an acceptable evidentiary standard. We hold ourselves to the same rule: we publish no accuracy percentage for our own detector without published methodology behind it, and we say so openly.
Free tier vs. paid: what you actually get
The free tier is genuinely generous and is the reason ZeroGPT is worth knowing about at all. You get up to 15,000 characters per scan — roughly 2,200 to 2,500 words of English prose — with sentence-level highlighting and a percentage gauge, no login required. For a free consumer tool, that limit is large; several competitors cap free scans at a fraction of it.

Annual billing saves between 23% and 30% against twelve monthly payments, with the discount widening as you go up the tiers, and API access is sold separately on a pay-as-you-go basis. The paid tiers mostly buy volume — bigger scans, batch uploads of multiple files, automatically generated PDF reports — plus access to the "High Accuracy Model." Which raises an awkward question ZeroGPT never answers: if the premium model is the accurate one, what exactly is the free gauge that millions of verdicts rest on?
The evidence: what independent testing found
ZeroGPT has been included in real published evaluations, which is more than can be said for many small detectors. The results are not flattering.
The most cited academic test is Weber-Wulff et al., "Testing of detection tools for AI-generated text," published in the International Journal for Educational Integrity in December 2023. The team tested 14 detection tools — ZeroGPT among them, alongside Turnitin, GPT Zero, Compilatio, and OpenAI's own classifier — against human-written, AI-generated, translated, edited, and machine-paraphrased documents. The headline findings: every tool scored below 80% overall accuracy, only five cleared 70%, and performance collapsed as text moved away from raw AI output. Across tools, accuracy averaged 74% on unmodified AI text, 42% on manually edited AI text, and just 26% on machine-paraphrased AI text. The authors' conclusion was blunt: the tools "are neither accurate nor reliable" and "should not be used in academic settings."
Then there's the RAID benchmark (Dugan et al., ACL 2024), the largest public stress test of detectors to date: over six million text samples across 11 generative models, 8 domains, and 11 adversarial attacks, run against 12 detectors — eight open-source and four commercial ones, the commercial four being GPTZero, Originality, Winston and ZeroGPT. So ZeroGPT is not being judged here by proxy; it was in the pool. RAID's headline finding applies to the whole category: detectors that advertise "extremely high accuracy (99% or more)" are "easily fooled by adversarial attacks, variations in sampling strategies, repetition penalties, and unseen generative models."
One result deserves singling out, because it is the most concrete number anyone has published about this tool. The authors swept each detector's threshold to plot accuracy against false-positive rate, and found that detectors could hit the accuracies "cited in many viral reports, but only at similarly high FPR." Some could not be turned down at all. ZeroGPT bottomed out at a 16.9% false-positive rate — that is its floor, the best it managed however conservatively it was tuned. Originality reached 0.62% on the same sweep. A tool that cannot be configured to misflag fewer than one human document in six is not a tool that should decide anything. A detector tuned to look brilliant on default ChatGPT output can fall apart when the generator changes its sampling temperature — something no student or client will ever tell you they did.
The pattern extends beyond ZeroGPT, and honesty requires saying so. OpenAI built its own classifier, watched it catch only 26% of AI text while falsely flagging 9% of human writing, and retired it in July 2023. Liang et al., in Patterns (2023), ran 91 human-written TOEFL essays through seven detectors and saw an average of 61.22% falsely flagged as AI — while the same detectors were near-perfect on essays by native-speaking US eighth graders. ZeroGPT was one of the seven — the paper names Originality.AI, Quil.org, Sapling, OpenAI's detector, Crossplag, GPTZero and ZeroGPT — and the mechanism it exposed — statistical detectors punishing plain, predictable English — applies to every perplexity-based tool, ZeroGPT included. The false-positive file
For ZeroGPT specifically, the documented embarrassments are unusually vivid.
In October 2024, Decrypt replicated and extended testing originally run by Christopher Penn, chief data scientist at Trust Insights. ZeroGPT rated the Declaration of Independence — written in 1776, by committee, on parchment — 97.93% AI-generated. It was the worst performer of the four tools tested; Grammarly and QuillBot called the same document human. In the same test, ZeroGPT then waved through an AI-rewritten passage of E.M. Forster's "The Machine Stops" as human-written. Both failure modes in one sitting: the false alarm and the miss.
It wasn't a one-off. The Dallas Express ran the 1836 Texas Declaration of Independence through ZeroGPT and got a verdict of nearly 90% AI-generated. Old formal prose is exactly what statistical detectors misread — it's uniform, conventional, and low-surprise, which is what "AI-like" means to a perplexity model. The problem is that the same description fits a lot of living writers: non-native English speakers taught rigid essay templates, technical and legal writers, and anyone who edits their prose toward plainness. Penn's line from that Decrypt piece deserves quoting in full, because it's the correct standard: "The false-positive rate — if you're going to kick someone out of college or revoke their doctoral degree — has to be zero. Period. End of story." No detector on the market meets that standard. ZeroGPT doesn't even publish what its false-positive rate is.
When ZeroGPT is a reasonable directional check
After all that, here's the concession, because it's real: ZeroGPT is often right. Raw, unedited output from a mainstream chatbot — the lazy copy-paste case — genuinely is detectable most of the time, and independent evaluations of the category routinely find 90%+ detection on untouched frontier-model text. A free tool that flags obviously machine-typical prose in three seconds has legitimate uses:
- A quick sanity check on your own draft before submission, to see whether your writing pattern-matches to machine-typical prose — knowing the score is a weather report, not a verdict.
- A first-pass triage signal for an editor screening freelance submissions, where a high score prompts a conversation and a look at revision history, never a rejection by itself.
- A cheap way to confirm the obvious, when text already smells like a chatbot — same stock transitions, same rhythm, no sourcing — and you want a second data point.
Notice the shape of every legitimate use: the score starts a human process. It never ends one.
When it isn't — and shouldn't be used at all
Don't use ZeroGPT (or any single detector score) to grade, accuse, fire, fail, or reject a specific person. The documented false positives, the absence of a published false-positive rate, and the category-wide research above make a lone percentage from a free web tool indefensible as evidence in any decision that touches someone's record or income.
Don't trust it on short text. Statistical detection needs runway; a paragraph gives a perplexity model almost nothing, and confident-looking scores on 100 words are noise with a gauge attached.
Don't trust it on edited, mixed, or translated text. Weber-Wulff's 42%-on-edited, 26%-on-paraphrased numbers are the category's dirty secret, and ZeroGPT has already demonstrated the miss side of that coin in public testing.
And don't assume the score means what the gauge implies. "97.93% AI" does not mean a 97.93% probability that a machine wrote it. It means the text sits far toward the machine-typical end of a statistical distribution — a distribution that also contains the Declaration of Independence. If you're accused, ask which tool produced the score, request the report, and bring drafts and version history; process evidence beats a gauge.
Why did ZeroGPT flag my human writing as AI? Detectors measure how predictable and uniform your prose is, not who wrote it. Plain, formulaic, or heavily polished writing — common among non-native speakers and technical writers — sits close to machine-typical patterns and gets flagged at documented, elevated rates.
Is ZeroGPT safe to paste confidential text into? Treat any free web detector as if pasted text may be retained. ZeroGPT does publish a privacy policy, but read it and you'll find it covers personal information in the standard way — collection, cookies, deletion rights, third-party sharing — without saying what happens to the text you paste into the scanner, which is the one question a user of a detector actually has. Don't put client work, unpublished research, or personal data into any free scanner whose policy doesn't answer it.
