Contract cheating

Contract cheating is paying or arranging for a third party to produce work that you then submit as your own — the form of academic misconduct that text-matching tools are structurally unable to detect.

In plain English

An essay mill writes you an original essay. Nobody has published it, so there is nothing in any database for a similarity check to match against, and it scores clean.

It is generally treated as more serious than plagiarism, because it is deliberate, transactional and premeditated rather than a failure of citation practice.

Row two is contract cheating and both systems are silent on it. The text is original, so nothing matches; a person wrote it, so it carries no machine signature.

Row four is the false positive problem: a careful student writing plainly gets the same output as row three.

Read the table as a whole and the awkward conclusion is that the two rows the tools flag are not the two rows an institution most wants to find.

Why it matters for AI detection

It sets a ceiling on what detection can achieve. An institution that responds to AI by tightening automated screening has not addressed the form of misconduct that was already invisible to it.

It also reframes the AI question. If the concern is work a student did not do, generative AI is a cheaper substitute for something that already existed — which suggests assessment design, drafting evidence and viva-style checks do more than any score.

For a student, the relevance is defensive: the evidence that answers contract cheating — version history, drafts, notes, being able to talk about your argument — is the same evidence that answers an AI accusation.

Plagiarism
Plagiarism reuses work that already exists somewhere. Contract cheating commissions work that does not, which is why one is matchable and the other is not.
