In plain English

A promise you make on arrival, rather than a list of rules you consult when in doubt.

That is the whole design. Codes describe the standard expected of you and leave the application to judgement, yours included.

A worked example

The same situation under two governing documents.

Situation: you used a grammar checker on a graded essay. The
syllabus is silent on AI.

Under a rulebook:
  Is this act on the prohibited list?  No.
  → permitted, and the institution bears the cost of its gap

Under an honour code:
  Is this consistent with the standard you accepted?
  → your judgement, and you may be asked to explain it

The difference is where the burden of interpretation sits. A rulebook that fails to mention something has failed to prohibit it. A code expects you to reason from the principle.

This cuts both ways in AI cases. A code gives you room to argue that ordinary tool use was consistent with the standard; it also gives an institution room to argue it was not.

The practical consequence is the same either way: where a code governs and the position is unclear, ask before submitting and keep the answer.

Why it matters for AI detection

Honour codes are common in US institutions and much rarer elsewhere, so guidance written for one system frequently does not describe the other. Knowing which kind governs you changes how you read every other rule.

Under a code, procedures are often run by a student panel rather than by staff, which changes the tone of a hearing and sometimes its evidential standards. It does not remove your entitlement to a fair process.

Codes predate all of this by more than a century, and most have not been rewritten for AI. That gap is a real ambiguity rather than a trap — and it is a reasonable thing to raise if the question was genuinely unclear when you submitted.

Syllabus AI policy

A code states a general standard for the whole institution. A syllabus policy sets operational rules for one course. Where both exist, the syllabus tells you what to do and the code tells you why.

Academic integrity

Academic integrity is the underlying value. An honour code is one institutional mechanism for committing students to it, alongside policies, procedures and declarations.
