The three reasons a PDF gets no score

It was under 300 words. This is the common one. Turnitin requires at least 300 words of prose before it will attempt an AI reading, which rules out short reflections, standalone abstracts, and anything slide-shaped that was exported to PDF.

It was a scan or a photograph. A PDF can hold text, or it can hold a picture of text. A scanned page has no machine-readable prose in it, so there is nothing for the 300-word floor to count. This is a consequence of the requirement rather than something Turnitin words that way, but it is the practical outcome: an image-only PDF cannot produce an AI score.

It was not in a supported language. AI writing detection covers English, Spanish and Japanese. That is much narrower than Turnitin’s similarity checking, and the two get confused constantly. A French thesis can return a similarity report and no AI indicator, and nothing is broken.

Converting to PDF does not hide anything

Worth stating directly, because it circulates as advice. A detector reads extracted text. Exporting a Word file to PDF changes the container and not the prose, so the same document reads the same either way.

The one thing format does change is whether text can be extracted at all — which is why a scan returns nothing. That is not evasion, it is failure to submit anything readable, and an institution will normally ask for a working file rather than accept the absence of a report as a clearance.

If a PDF of yours has been flagged

The format has no bearing on it. Everything on what to do when you have been accused applies unchanged, and the evidence that matters is the same: draft history, which a PDF export usually destroys. If you are working somewhere that keeps revisions, keep the original.
