If you used Grammarly to fix spelling, commas, and typos, you have very little to worry about: mechanical corrections don't make prose read as AI-written, and there's no evidence Turnitin flags them. The real risk sits in Grammarly's other layers — full-sentence rewrites and generative drafting — which produce genuinely machine-made text. The line between those layers is the whole answer, so let's draw it carefully.
You're probably reading this in one of two moods. Either you're about to submit a paper you ran through Grammarly and want to know if you've accidentally done something wrong, or you've already been flagged and you're somewhere between confused and sick to your stomach. Both are common enough that this question has become one of the most-asked in academic AI detection. So before anything else: using a spellchecker is not cheating, has never been cheating, and no reasonable integrity process ends badly for a student whose only sin was accepting a comma splice correction. Hold onto that while we go through the details.
Grammarly is three products wearing one interface
The confusion around this question exists because "Grammarly" stopped being one thing years ago. The product now spans three layers that have completely different implications for an AI score, and students, instructors, and half the blog posts on this topic talk past each other by not saying which layer they mean.

Layer one: mechanical corrections. The classic Grammarly. It underlines "recieve," flags a missing apostrophe, suggests "their" for "there." Accepting these changes removes surface errors from prose you composed. Every word order, every argumentative move, every rhythm choice remains yours.
Layer two: rewrite suggestions. Somewhere along the way, Grammarly started offering to rewrite whole sentences — for clarity, for conciseness, for tone, for "fluency." Accept one and a model has recomposed that sentence: new structure, new word choices, smoothed rhythm. Accept dozens across an essay and a meaningful share of your sentences were assembled by a machine, even though every idea is yours.
Layer three: generative drafting. Grammarly now includes generative AI that will draft paragraphs from a prompt, expand bullet points into prose, rewrite sections wholesale, and — per reporting by Plagiarism Today — even offers a "humanizer" option in its AI editor — a tool category Turnitin now targets directly, as we cover in does Turnitin detect humanized AI. Text produced this way is AI-generated text, full stop. It doesn't matter that it came from Grammarly rather than ChatGPT.
The layers form a gradient of authorship. At one end, you wrote it and software cleaned it. At the other, software wrote it. The middle is genuinely blurry, and the blur is where the anxiety lives.
What Turnitin actually measures — and why layer one is safe
Turnitin's AI indicator, launched April 4, 2023, doesn't detect tools. It has no way of knowing Grammarly was installed, no browser telemetry, no list of extensions. It reads the submitted prose and estimates how machine-typical the writing is, chiefly through perplexity — how predictable each next word is — and burstiness, the variation in sentence length and structure. Human prose is lumpy and a little unpredictable. Model prose is smooth and even. That statistical difference is the entire detection mechanism, which we unpack in the Turnitin detection guide.
Now apply that to layer one. Correcting "definately" to "definitely" doesn't change your word choice patterns, sentence shapes, or idea sequence. A spellchecked human essay is still, statistically, a human essay. There is no mechanism by which fixing typos produces machine-typical prose, and no documented case we're aware of in which mechanical corrections alone drove a meaningful AI score. Microsoft Word has autocorrected for thirty years; nobody's Word documents are being flagged for it.
Layer two is different in kind, not just degree. A rewritten sentence was generated by a model — conditioned on your draft, but generated. One or two per page is statistical noise. Accept them wholesale, though, and you've effectively run your essay through a light paraphrasing pass, with effects similar to what we describe in our QuillBot analysis and in can Turnitin detect paraphrased text: the prose gets smoother, more even, more probable. More machine-typical, in exactly the dimension detectors measure. Whether that crosses Turnitin's flagging threshold in any given essay is unknowable from the outside — but the direction of the effect isn't in doubt.
Layer three isn't a gray area at all. Text drafted by Grammarly's generative features is AI writing and gets detected — or missed — at whatever rate AI writing generally does. If your course bans AI-generated text, that ban covers Grammarly's generative side as surely as it covers ChatGPT.
"But I only fixed my grammar, and I still got flagged"
This is the case that keeps this question trending, and it deserves a straight answer: it happens, and Grammarly is usually not the reason.
AI detectors produce false positives on entirely human writing. Not rarely enough. The Washington Post's April 2023 test watched Turnitin flag an innocent student's own prose. Liang et al., in Patterns (2023), ran 91 human-written TOEFL essays through seven detectors and got an average false-flag rate of 61.22% — 89 of the 91 essays were flagged by at least one tool — while the same detectors scored near-perfect on essays by native-speaking US 8th graders. (Turnitin wasn't among the seven, but it uses the same statistical approach.) Turnitin itself claims a false positive rate under 1%, yet that figure applies only to documents where more than 20% of the text is flagged, and the company displays scores of 1–19% as an asterisk rather than a number — its own acknowledgment that low-range calls can't be trusted. Vanderbilt University found the at-scale false-positive math troubling enough to disable the feature entirely in August 2023.
The documented false-positive risk factors are worth naming, because they explain most "but I barely used Grammarly" cases: non-native English speakers, students taught rigid five-paragraph structures, technical and scientific writers, and heavy self-editors — people whose prose is unusually even and conventional before any tool touches it. Notice what those have in common with Grammarly's whole value proposition. Grammarly's corrections push writing toward standard, polished, error-free English. So does ESL instruction. So does obsessive self-editing. A detector can't distinguish "polished by a careful human" from "polished by a machine" — it only sees polish.
So when a flagged student says "the only thing I used was Grammarly," three explanations compete. The tool's rewrite layer contributed more than they realized. Their natural writing style sits in the false-positive risk zone. Or the detector simply got it wrong, as detectors demonstrably do. From the outside — and often from the inside — these are hard to tell apart. Which is why the practical answer to this whole topic isn't a detection-avoidance trick. It's evidence.
Grammarly Authorship: the receipts feature
Grammarly saw this anxiety and, credit where due, built directly for it. Grammarly Authorship is a process-tracking feature that records how a document came together and sorts the text into categories: typed directly by you, pasted from a browser source, pasted from an unknown source, AI-generated, and AI-generated-then-edited, along with text touched by ordinary grammar corrections.
The current shape of the feature, per Grammarly's documentation: it works in Google Docs through the Chrome and Edge extensions, in Microsoft Word on Windows and Mac (with a 20-page document limit), and in Grammarly's own docs editor. It's available on all plans including free, though paid tiers show finer-grained AI-percentage attribution. You switch it on via a thumbprint icon before you start writing, and when you're done it generates a report with three parts: an analytics breakdown, your full text color-coded by source, and a replay of your editing history — the document assembling itself, keystroke by keystroke. Reports are shareable by URL — and the retention rule cuts sharply both ways: share a report and its data is stored for 12 months, but leave it unshared and Grammarly keeps it for only 24 hours. Two limits worth knowing before you rely on it: Word caps it at 20 pages, and the data is per-device, so opening the document on another machine reverts your earlier writing to "Unknown."
Think about what that replay is worth in an integrity meeting. A detector score is a probability estimate from a black box. A replay of you composing, deleting, retyping, and slowly building an argument over three hours is direct evidence of process. No detector output survives contact with it. Word's version history and Google Docs' revision log serve the same function less elegantly — and one of them is probably already running on everything you write.
Two honest caveats. Authorship only helps if it was on before you wrote — you can't generate receipts retroactively. And it's Grammarly grading Grammarly's own ecosystem; a skeptical committee may weigh an independent revision history more heavily. What to actually do
Before you write. Read the syllabus for an AI policy, and note whether it distinguishes grammar assistance from generative assistance — more and more do. If it's ambiguous, ask; instructors respect the question, and an email reply is itself evidence of good faith. Turn on Authorship or confirm version history is active. Thirty seconds of setup beats any amount of after-the-fact explaining.
While you write. Use layer one freely. Treat layer two deliberately: accepting an occasional clarity rewrite is normal editing, but if you notice yourself accepting every suggested rewrite on autopilot, you're gradually swapping your voice for the model's — which is a writing problem before it's ever a detection problem. Treat layer three as what it is: AI generation, permitted only where AI generation is permitted.

If you're flagged anyway. Don't panic-confess to using AI if you didn't; a surprising number of students do, on the theory that contrition ends things faster. It doesn't — it converts a defensible situation into an admitted violation. Ask for the actual report, including whether the score was above 20% or in the asterisk range Turnitin itself marks unreliable. Bring your process evidence: Authorship report, version history, notes, prior drafts, earlier graded work in your voice. The bigger picture
There's something genuinely unfair in how this plays out, and it's worth saying plainly. For two decades, schools told students to use writing tools — spellcheck was responsible, Grammarly was diligence. Then generative AI arrived inside those same interfaces, one click away from the comma fixes, and the diligence habit suddenly carried risk. Students didn't move the line. The tools moved it under them, quietly, in a product update.
The durable protection isn't tool avoidance. It's authorship you can demonstrate — and Turnitin's own design implicitly agrees, given that its accuracy claims begin only at the 20% threshold and its asterisk policy concedes the low range to uncertainty. That asterisk, by the way, is genuinely responsible engineering: Turnitin looked at its error curve and chose to suppress the scores it couldn't stand behind. The trouble is what happens downstream, when a probability estimate lands in front of a tired instructor as a red number.
Write your drafts. Keep your receipts. Fix your commas without guilt. And if the accusation comes anyway, meet it with process evidence, not apologies for spellcheck.
FAQ
Does Turnitin know I have Grammarly installed? No. Turnitin only analyzes the submitted document's text. It has no visibility into your browser extensions, apps, or writing tools — it infers machine-typicality from the prose alone.
Will Grammarly's spelling and grammar corrections give me an AI score? There's no mechanism or documented evidence for that. Mechanical corrections remove surface errors from text you composed; they don't restructure your sentences into machine-typical patterns. Word-level fixes are the safest layer of Grammarly by a wide margin.
What about accepting Grammarly's full-sentence rewrite suggestions? Occasionally, low risk. Systematically, real risk — each accepted rewrite is a model-composed sentence, and enough of them shift your document's statistics toward what detectors flag. If most sentences in a paper were machine-rewritten, treat it as machine-influenced text, because statistically it is.
Is GrammarlyGO / Grammarly's generative AI detectable like ChatGPT? Yes, in principle — generative output is AI writing regardless of which brand produced it, and Turnitin scores prose, not logos. There's no reason Grammarly's generated text sits outside whatever rate applies to any other model's.
What is Grammarly Authorship and should I use it? It's a free feature that tracks how your document was written — typed, pasted, AI-generated — and produces a shareable report including a replay of your editing history. If your course allows Grammarly at all, turning it on costs nothing and gives you strong evidence of authorship if you're ever questioned. It must be on before you write; it can't reconstruct the past.
I already submitted and got flagged, and Authorship wasn't on. Am I out of options? No. Google Docs and Word both keep revision histories by default, and drafts, outlines, notes, and your track record of past writing all count. Should I just uninstall Grammarly to be safe? That's overkill for most students. The mechanical layer is safe and useful; the sensible move is knowing which layer you're using, keeping generative features off for graded work unless your policy allows them, and keeping process evidence on. Fear-uninstalling a spellchecker cedes real value to a mostly imaginary risk.
My instructor says any Grammarly use is prohibited. Is that enforceable? Whether it's wise is debatable, but the syllabus governs — a course can set stricter rules than the university default. If your instructor bans it, comply for that course and raise the policy question separately if it seems unreasonable. Don't make yourself the test case.
