Sometimes, yes — and more often than the "QuillBot passes Turnitin" posts suggest. QuillBot output faces two separate detection risks: a similarity match against the source you paraphrased, and an AI-typicality flag on the machine-paraphrased prose itself. Turnitin added a dedicated AI paraphrasing detection feature in July 2024 specifically to catch spun AI text. Nobody, including QuillBot, can tell you your specific paper will pass.
That's the short version. The long version matters, because most of what's written about this question online is either marketing for paraphrasing tools or marketing for detectors, and both sides have reasons to overstate their case. Let's take it apart properly.
What QuillBot actually does
QuillBot is a paraphrasing engine. You paste text in, pick a mode, and it rewrites the passage — swapping synonyms, restructuring sentences, adjusting register. As of 2026 it offers ten modes. Two are free: Standard, which rewrites with new vocabulary and word order, and Fluency, which smooths grammar and readability. The premium tier adds Formal, Simple, Creative, Academic, Expand, Shorten, Custom, and — tellingly — a mode called Humanize, which QuillBot describes as rewriting text "in a more human, authentic way."
A synonym slider controls how aggressive the rewrite is. Pushed left, you get conservative changes that stay close to the original. Pushed right, more of the vocabulary and structure gets replaced, with a corresponding rise in meaning drift. The free plan processes 125 words per request; premium removes the cap. QuillBot also sells its own AI detector alongside the paraphraser, which is a genuinely funny business model if you think about it for more than a second.

Two things follow from this design. First, QuillBot doesn't generate ideas — it transforms existing text, which means there is always a source document, and that source is where your first risk lives. Second, the transformation is performed by a language model, which means the output carries statistical habits of machine writing — and that's where your second risk lives.
Understanding those two risks separately is the whole game, because they're handled by two different Turnitin systems that people constantly conflate.
Risk one: the similarity match
Turnitin's original product — the one that's been around since the early 2000s — is a similarity checker. It compares your submission against a database of web pages, published articles, and hundreds of millions of previously submitted student papers, then highlights overlapping text.
Here's what students get wrong: similarity matching is not a word-for-word comparison. Turnitin matches strings and patterns, and moderately paraphrased text frequently retains enough of the original's skeleton to trigger a partial match. Run a paragraph from a journal article through QuillBot on Standard mode with the slider left of center, and you'll typically get the same sentence order, the same argumentative structure, the same proper nouns and technical terms (which QuillBot mostly can't replace), and synonym-swapped connective tissue in between. That can still match. And there's a harder truth underneath the technical one. If you paraphrased a source and didn't cite it, the detection question is almost beside the point. Paraphrasing without attribution is plagiarism under essentially every academic integrity policy on earth — it was plagiarism in 1995 when students did it by hand with a thesaurus, and it's plagiarism now that software does it in four seconds. QuillBot doesn't change what the act is. It changes how fast you can commit it.
If you paraphrased a source and did cite it, a moderate similarity match is usually not a problem at all. Instructors read similarity reports in context; a cited, paraphrased passage that partially matches its source is normal scholarship, maybe slightly lazy scholarship. The panic-inducing scenario is uncited matching text, and QuillBot doesn't protect you from it.
Risk two: the AI writing score
The second system is newer. Turnitin launched its AI writing indicator on April 4, 2023, inside the existing Similarity Report. It doesn't compare your text to anything. It reads the prose itself and estimates, segment by segment, how machine-typical the writing is — measuring things like perplexity (how predictable each next word is) and burstiness (how much sentence length and structure vary). Human writing tends to be uneven: short sentence, long sentence, odd word choice, a tangent. Language-model writing tends toward smooth, medium-everything consistency. Now think about what QuillBot's output looks like statistically. It's text produced by a language model. Even when the ideas came from a human source, the sentences were assembled by a machine choosing probable words in probable orders. Machine paraphrase tends to regularize prose — it sands off the weird phrasing, evens out the rhythm, and replaces distinctive vocabulary with statistically safer choices. In other words, the transformation that lowers your similarity score can simultaneously push your prose toward the pattern the AI detector is looking for. Students treat QuillBot as an escape hatch from detection. Mechanically, it's closer to a trade: less similarity risk, more AI-typicality risk.
Turnitin noticed the same thing everyone else did — that paraphrasers were being used specifically to launder ChatGPT output — and on July 16, 2024 it announced a dedicated AI paraphrasing detection feature inside Turnitin Originality. Per Turnitin's own description, the feature identifies when "AI paraphrasing tools may have been used to modify AI-generated text to avoid detection," highlights the affected sections, and breaks the score into text that was likely AI-generated versus AI-generated and then paraphrased. The press release names no specific products, but "AI text spun through a paraphraser" is QuillBot's most notorious use case, and it would be naive to think Turnitin's training data ignored the market leader.
In August 2025, Turnitin went a step further and shipped detection aimed at AI "humanizer" tools — software built explicitly to strip machine fingerprints from generated text. Turnitin's chief product officer said the company had "researched and identified the signals and patterns of leading humanizers," claiming a false positive rate under 1% for the new capability — a claim that, as plagiarism analyst Jonathan Bailey noted at the time, still awaits independent third-party verification. So the honest mechanical summary is this: Turnitin now operates three overlapping nets — similarity, AI writing, and AI-paraphrase/humanizer detection — and QuillBot output can plausibly snag on any of them depending on what you fed in and how hard you spun it.
What "can plausibly snag" means in numbers
Here's where honesty requires conceding some uncertainty, because the public evidence is thinner than either side admits.
What we know with confidence: Turnitin's detector screened over 200 million papers in its first year, of which roughly 11% showed at least 20% AI writing and about 3% were 80%+ AI, per Turnitin's April 2024 first-anniversary release. Turnitin claims 98% accuracy with a false positive rate under 1% — but both figures apply only to documents where more than 20% of the text is flagged. Scores from 1–19% display as an asterisk rather than a number, which is Turnitin's own admission that its low-range calls aren't trustworthy. The largest peer-reviewed multi-tool test (Weber-Wulff et al., 2023) put every one of 14 detectors below 80% accuracy — and just 26% on machine-paraphrased AI text, which is precisely the QuillBot case.
What we don't know: any independently audited detection rate for QuillBot-processed text specifically. Turnitin has published no per-tool numbers for its paraphrase detection feature. Academic studies of paraphrase-evasion predate the July 2024 feature and tested older detector versions. There is, as of this writing, no rigorous public answer to "what percentage of QuillBot output does Turnitin catch," and anyone who quotes one at you is selling something.
Why "QuillBot passes Turnitin" claims are unreliable snapshots
Search this question and you'll find dozens of blog posts and YouTube videos confidently reporting that QuillBot beats Turnitin, and a comparable number reporting it gets caught. Both can be "true" and neither is useful, for four reasons.
The sample sizes are absurd. A typical test is one ChatGPT essay, run through QuillBot once, submitted once. That's an anecdote with a thumbnail. Detection is probabilistic — the same workflow can pass Monday and fail Wednesday depending on the passage, the mode, the slider position, and which segments cross Turnitin's classification threshold.
The target moves. A test performed in early 2024 tells you nothing about a detector that added paraphrase detection in July 2024 and humanizer detection in August 2025. Turnitin retrains; QuillBot updates its models; every published result is a photograph of a race, not the race. Most viral "QuillBot passes" content predates the very feature built to catch it — and rarely mentions that.
The incentives are contaminated. A large share of "we tested whether QuillBot beats Turnitin" content is affiliate marketing for QuillBot, for a competing paraphraser, or for a detector. Results that drive clicks get published; boring mixed results don't. That's survivorship bias with a revenue share.
Access is asymmetric. Turnitin doesn't sell to students, so most testers check QuillBot output against other detectors — GPTZero, ZeroGPT, Copyleaks — and extrapolate. Different detectors use different models and thresholds. Passing ZeroGPT tells you approximately nothing about Turnitin, and the study that should worry everyone here is Liang et al. (2023), which found seven detectors disagreeing wildly on the same 91 human-written essays — flagging them falsely at an average rate of 61%. Tools that disagree that much on human text are not interchangeable proxies for each other.
OpenAI, which had better access to training data than any blogger, retired its own AI text classifier in July 2023 because it correctly identified only 26% of AI text while falsely flagging 9% of human writing. If OpenAI couldn't build a reliable detector, treat every screenshot-based "pass/fail" verdict with the suspicion it deserves.
The question under the question
Most people asking "can Turnitin detect QuillBot" are really asking one of two different questions, and they deserve different answers.
"I wrote this myself, used QuillBot to reword some clunky sentences, and now I'm scared." Breathe. Rewording your own sentences isn't plagiarism — there's no source to match — and a handful of machine-polished sentences scattered through 1,500 words of your own prose is unlikely to push a document past Turnitin's 20% reporting threshold. Turnitin's detector needs roughly 300 words of continuous prose to classify at all, and its stated accuracy claims only kick in above the 20% mark. That said, check your course policy: some instructors now ban paraphrasing tools by name, and "I only used it a little" is a weaker position than never needing the conversation. If you're anxious about a specific draft, running it through an AI detector yourself beforehand at least tells you what a screening tool sees — imperfectly, because no two detectors agree.
"I generated this with ChatGPT and QuillBot is my laundering step." Then the detection question is the wrong question. If AI use is banned in your course, spinning the output doesn't make it compliant — it makes it a violation with an obstruction step attached, and academic integrity hearings treat concealment as an aggravating factor, not a defense. Turnitin's paraphrase-detection feature exists precisely because this workflow became common, and even where the software misses, instructors don't: QuillBot artifacts (broken idioms, wrong-register synonyms, "the study delved into the domain of...") are recognizable to anyone who grades forty papers a week.
There is a legitimate middle, and it's the one we built for. FAQ
Does QuillBot show up in Turnitin's similarity report? Not as "QuillBot" — the similarity report only shows matches to source text. If you paraphrased a published source lightly, the report can still partially match that source. If you paraphrased your own writing, there's nothing to match.
Can Turnitin specifically tell that QuillBot was used, versus another paraphraser? No public evidence suggests Turnitin names individual tools. Its July 2024 feature flags text as "AI-generated and then AI-paraphrased" as a category; it doesn't attribute the work to a specific product.
Is using QuillBot academic misconduct by itself? It depends entirely on your course policy and what you fed it. Paraphrasing your own sentences is allowed in many courses and banned in some; paraphrasing an uncited source is plagiarism everywhere, tool or no tool. Read the syllabus, and ask the instructor if it's ambiguous.
Will QuillBot's Humanize mode stop Turnitin from flagging AI text? Nobody outside Turnitin can honestly say, and results would vary by document anyway. Turnitin shipped humanizer-targeted detection in August 2025 claiming to have modeled "leading humanizers," so treating any humanizer mode as a guarantee is a bet against an adversary who studies these tools specifically.
